6 I GOT A BILLION PROBLEMS

Jessica

I’m doing it. I’m doing the thing.

My first week as an alien’s personal assistant is over and I haven’t been fired. That’s probably because I am sleeping with the boss, but I am not the first person to do that, and I won’t be the last.

On the sixth day, I wake up in my unbelievably comfortable bed, with the softest sheets known to any species in the universe cradling me atop the comfiest mattress in creation. I feel very spoiled and very fortunate. When I look out the window, I am able to look down at literally everybody on Earth. This sort of view could really go to your head. I also have the intrusive thought that I should jump out the window, because my dumb monkey brain thinks I’ll fall to Earth, when in reality I’ll float about suffocating.

“Good morning.”

“Fucking Christ!” I curse, leaping around to face Cir, who has once again walked into my apartment like he owns the place. I guess he does. Though he tells me I am his fiancee, we do not yet live together. He doesn’t have to tell me about the need to keep up appearances. I’m familiar enough with the mechanics of shame to know when I’m being hidden.

“Am I late to work again?”

Cir chuckles. “No. Today is your day off.”

“It is? Awesome! So, uh, what…”

“What am I doing here? I was wondering if you would be interested in a tour of the station. You should be familiar with the place you live.”

“I guess I should,” I say. “Give me a moment to get dressed.”

“Yes. Get dressed, and then I will take you to breakfast.”

Breakfast sounds absolutely amazing. I haven’t actually explored the Halo very much yet. I’m half-afraid I will get lost if I go by myself, or somehow caught out in my lie. I’ve kept myself to my apartment and my work.

The Halo station is impressive, but I would not have expected anything else. Cir leads me through enchanted halls to a grand open dining hall in which the Cupid swarm. There must be over a thousand of them here. It is a very large space, even larger than Times Square, and twice as bright, lit with an almost ethereal sun glow. There are pillars, columns, and plenty of coiled and artistic elements hanging between them. The overall ambiance is of an enchanted hall. I feel incredibly small and helplessly human amid this mass of Cupid.

I notice, for the first time, that not all of them are wearing anything close to human attire or monk-like robes. Some of them are wearing the sort of clothing with a lot of pockets and the thick boots that suggest they are military. They look like the guards who keep the Halo elevator safe when it is extended, but even more armored.

“Are those soldiers?”’

“Yes,” Cir answers without thinking. “What would you like to eat? There are foods here from across the galaxy, and you are able to consume at least half of them.
